HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR GRADUATES IN NATUASHISH

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership (LATP) would like to congratulate the 12 students from Natuashish who successfully completed the Natuashish Heavy Equipment Operator program, which began October 2010 and was completed in June 2011. This was the second community based training project funded by the LATP for 2010/2011. The training took place in the student's home community of Natuashish and was provided by Academy Canada, via LATP funding.

8 WEEK PLASTER/PAINTING SKILLS ENHANCEMENT CUSTOMIZED PROGRAM

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership is sponsoring an 8 week Plaster/Painting Skills Enhancement Customized Program for NunatuKavut members and Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries.

This customized training program will be offered in the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

CARPENTRY GRADUATES IN SHESHATSHIU

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership (LATP) would like to congratulate the 17 students from Sheshatshiu who successfully completed the Sheshatshiu Carpentry Training Program. This program began in June 2010 and was completed in February 2011. This was the second community based training project in Sheshatshiu funded by the LATP for 2010/2011. The training was provided by Academy Canada, via LATP funding. The successful completion of this training has provided the students with accredited qualifications and valuable skills for a wide variety of employment opportunities in the carpentry field.

FIREFIGHTING GRADUATES IN SHESHATSHIU

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership (LATP) would like to congratulate the 13 students from Sheshatshiu who successfully completed the firefighter program, which began June 2010. What types of jobs can people train for?

LATP will offer education,training,and job placement support to Aboriginal men, women and youth.

Training will focus on apprenticeship type occupations such areas those applicable to the construction trades. Examples of the type of training opportunities include; heavy equipment operator; iron worker; concrete worker; truck driver; various camp support positions; and supervisory and management positions.

The partnership will also contribute to training and workplace experience required for skilled positions in operations management and emergency response, which are in demand by Aboriginal, private and public sector employers in the region. Specific Apprenticeship and Certification information can be found at www.ed.gov.nl.ca/app.
How do interested people apply?

There are a number of options for those interested in applying for LATP training. Individuals can either apply:

Directly through the LATP office in Happy Valley -Goose Bay;
Through the LATP website (www.latp.ca);
Through LATP outreach offices which are set up in applicable communities; or
Through band council offices where applicable.
What does funding cover?

Funding through LATP will assist Aboriginal individuals in covering the costs of:

Tuition
Materials required for learning
Living costs and travel allowances associated with training away from home.
Who can apply for funding through LATP?

Members of Innu Nation, Nunatsiavut Government and NunatuKavut who wish to engage in training for employment in resource based industry as well as positions within the communities are eligible to apply for assistance.
20 Apprentices working with various private sector companies in Labrador

LATP'S Wage Subsidy Program for Apprentices and on-the-job training is progressing very well. We now have 20 apprentices working with various private sector companies in Labrador. LATP is presently working with a large company to hire on more than 20 apprentices, with more companies regularly coming forward intrested in the wage subsidy program. In addition, people who have completed pre-apprenticeship programs are also coming forward to enlist in the apprenticeship program to aid them in receiving their journeyperson status.
